Over the course of the day I had cut out all the fabric for Block 2 of the FQS Mystery Block of the Month, so I was all ready to sit down at the sewing machine after Little Miss went to bed. Well, I should have known better. Little Miss has been sick with a cold and her ears decided to give her grief Friday night so I stayed with her in bed. I didn't get a chance to get near the sewing machine until Sunday morning, when Little Miss and her daddy went out to give mummy a much needed break. And this is what I got done....

Just the bottom section left to do. Some bits look a bit gathered, not sure why. And I've just this second noticed that I cut my fabric wrong - look at the red strips either side of the blue square. Bugger! Why did I not see that??

One other thing that has been keeping me busy this weekend is this little guy..

Meet (name yet to be decided). He is the treasured new addition to our family. Can you believe that anyone could throw this sweet little angel across a room and slam him into a wall? And at some time in the past smash some of his teeth out (see his tongue hanging out)? And who knows what else? We have adopted him through Paws 4 Life, run by Rachel and an awesome team of helpers in Hamilton. PAWS 4 LIFE is an incredible organisation that offers abused and neglected animals a sanctuary until their perfect home comes along. Rachel and the foster carers and assistants ensure that everything is done to get these animals fit, well and happy at whatever expense is required. Paws 4 Life exists solely on donations by the public, so I am putting the word out to everyone to please consider helping this very deserving charity in any way possible. This wee chap, and many others would be eternally grateful.

Have a great week everyone, and keep well.

First up I started on a pillow that I bought as a kit. I had already cut the strips so it was just a matter of sewing them together. There are some wool applique flowers to go along the central piece, but I just didn't feel like doing them last night, so this is as far as got with this project.

Next up, I got to work on Block 2 of Chick Jubilee. Again I had already prepared the freezer paper shapes, and just needed to spray starch and press the fabric pieces into shape. For the circles I used aluminium foil wrapped around the shape to help create a neat edge. The wheels looked perfect when I removed the freezer paper after using this method, but as you can see, in the process of glueing each piece into place, the pointy bits have appeared. Not impressed! I didn't do any of the stitching last night as our lighting is not very good and my eyesight is even worse, but I did a wee bit this morning. I've made it very hard on myself by sticking too many pieces on too soon, but I'm not removing them as it was a mission with all those curves!

These little lovelies were what I tackled last. I have wanted to try these for so long!! I found what I think is absolutely stunning fabric, and just had to try my hand at hexagons, at last! I think they're perfect!

This final photo is of Block 1 of the FQS Mystery Block of the Month. I could pretend that I rustled this one up last night along with everything else, but no, this was last weekend's project. It needs a good press, but I'm really pleased with how this turned out. It only required a little unpicking here and there to get things lining up right, and I'm feeling rather proud of how I've improved since my first attempts at piecing.

On that note, I will leave you and go and see what the other lovely ladies got up to last night. Thank you so much for having a look here, and I hope you will visit again. And thank you Cheryll for hosting FNWF.

Take care
Tonight I'm linking up with Cheryll for FNWF. I certainly have plenty to be getting on with!

See you tomorrow with the results.Helenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16193128554156253674noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5896456561120783200.post-84588078344276112992013-05-15T16:19:00.001-07:002013-05-15T16:19:44.359-07:00Mothers' Day Mini SwapI participated in Cheryll's Mothers's Day 12" Mini Swap, and my partner was Danette. I have been following Danette's blog for ages and love the things she makes, so I knew I was in for a treat. Well I was not disappointed. Look at this stunner!

Danette used paper piecing to make the heart. It looks seriously complicated to me. Here is a closer look.

It matches my Mothers' Day roses perfectly.

Thank you so much Danette. This mini is a real treasure. I love everything about it!

Here is what I sent to Danette.

It was square, honest! I just can't take decent photos.

I love this design. It is a pattern I found in a Patchwork & Stitching magazine, designed by the amazing Jennifer Reynolds of Elefantz Designs. I just changed the word to suit the theme. It was fun to stitch - I learned satin stitch and chain stitch in the process. Oh, how I love chain stitch! It is so forgiving!

I sent my favourite chocolate goodies too. I do hope Danette enjoys them as much as I do.

Thank you Cheryll for organising such a great swap. I think you do an amazing job!Helenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16193128554156253674noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5896456561120783200.post-37883886273915799582013-03-26T04:43:00.003-07:002013-03-26T04:43:50.418-07:00Stitch-Me-Up

Oh boy, is it my day already???? Have you been following the Stitch me up blog hop? What an amazingly talented bunch of stitchers there are out there. The designs provided for the participants are stunning, and it has been great seeing everyones' interpretations of them all.

Well, I am about to humiliate myself. I started on two projects and finished neither. I've not been myself lately and am struggling to motivate myself to do much of anything. Now that I have that out of the way, I shall proceed to show you what I HAVE done. I've laid out the border fabric and binding with the projects so you can get an idea of how they should look when finished.

First up, a complete disaster. I have given up on this one as I have decided that black just shows up my poor quality stitching WAAAAAY too much.

You can see where I have been attempting to unpick the worst offenders. Even that hasn't gone well!

This next project is not far off being completed. Just a few more french knots, some blanket stitching around the rectangles and, hey presto, my table runner will be done - well almost. I would like to have used a fancier stitch than just back stitch but, well, I don't know how to do any others!

If you feel like popping back here in the not too distant future you may see the finished product.

I have completed another project but I won't be showing that until later this month, so it can't be counted yet.

We've had a bit of sickness around here lately. Little Miss, then me, with colds, me with a headache that I can't shake off, and yesterday Little Miss had her vaccinations (she always ends up suffering, poor thing). So I'm looking forward to a new month, with good health and good fortune. Here's hoping for the same for you.

Until next time....Helenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16193128554156253674noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5896456561120783200.post-91757145298507174292013-02-15T20:31:00.000-08:002013-02-15T21:33:11.226-08:00Initial Heart SwapYay, I'm back! I am now in possession of a shiny new laptop (not that my previous one was old - it was only a year old). Unfortunately I am now running Windows 8. It is soooo different! If I hadn't been shown how, I wouldn't even be able to turn the laptop off. There is no START button! Intuitive it is NOT!! I will play around with it for a while, and if I can't make sense of it, I'll be installing Windows 7. I guess I'm showing my age - eeek!

Now, as I posted before I have received my Initial Heart from Michell. Finally here are the photos.
As you can see my binding skills need major improvement. I'm so sorry Clare. Of course I also sent a box of choccies.

Thanks so much to Cheryl for organising this great swap. I have loved being part of it.Helenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16193128554156253674noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5896456561120783200.post-76929650552764318942013-02-10T17:56:00.000-08:002013-02-10T17:56:29.466-08:00Lemonade and laptopsSo, what do you get when you mix lemonade, a laptop and a child's feet? A dead laptop, ha ha ha!! Yep, my laptop is currently being assessed for insurance purposes, and who knows how long it will be before I'm up and running again. For today, I'm using the library computer so that I can write a quick post and send an email to Michell to thank her for my Initial Heart gift. Michell sent me a sweet crazy patched (I think thats what it's called) heart made with gorgeous fabrics, and a bar of chocolate that has already been demolished. I will have to post a photo at a later date when I have a computer again. I will also post photos of the gifts I sent to Clare. Clare phoned me on Saturday morning to tell me her parcel had arrived. It was such a lovely surprise! We must have chatted for close to an hour I'm sure. Isn't this blogging/swapping community awesome!!

Well that is it for now. I am looking forward to being able to catch up with everyones blogs soon. I miss reading about what you are all getting up to. I hope you are all well.

Take care
This month I have two finishes so far, with another project due to be finished tonight (talk about last minute!). I will post again later if I can get it completed in time. Here are the two that are done...

Meet Rosie

This is my first softie and I'm really pleased with the result. Rosie has been a huge hit. Little Miss will not part with her, day or night. Yay!!

And here is a dress I made for Little Miss

It is meant to be size 4, but is huge! So it has been put away for next summer.

I had asked Little Miss if she would put the dress on for me, so I could take a better picture. No way!!!!!!!! But when it came to taking the photo she just couldn't resist being part of it....

What's that saying... Never work with kids or animals! So true!!

Until next time

I love this idea - celebrating the special things in our lives. It can be things, people, feelings or places. A bit like a gratitude journal really, something I have always wanted to try. So I have signed up with Melody from House on the Side of the Hill for her monthly Tuesdays Treasures. And here is my treasure this month.

Yes, I'm afraid my Christmas decorations are still out. The tree has gone but everything else will be packed away in the next day or two. This is the first year I've ever had a nativity set. Ever. I spotted this set in a shop in December 2011 and fell in love, but couldn't afford it. The shop offered layby from February onwards though, so I put it away then, and slowly paid it off. It took me over six months! It was stupid money really, and Hubby has made the occasional comment about spending so much on a Christmas decoration, but I just HAD to have it! I'm not even religious! I know - what a weirdo! Anyway, I love it, and this is my Tuesday's Treasure. Thanks for reading! And thanks to Melody for hosting.

See ya
HelenHelenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16193128554156253674noreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5896456561120783200.post-11519175736636258082013-01-05T17:11:00.003-08:002013-01-05T17:11:46.159-08:00A little late but here's the result of my FNWFSo not much got done on Friday. Little Miss didn't go to sleep until 9.45pm - she's all out of kilter after a mystery illness - so by the time I managed to start on my project I was ready for bed myself!

I recut the legs using one piece of fabric for each, eliminating the seam down the front. I'm much happier with the result now. And I've started on the face. This is such a cute pattern, and so simple to make. It would be great to have a few of these made up for the present cupboard. At the moment though I'd be grateful to just get this one finished!!

Many thanks to Cheryll for hosting Friday Night With Friends. I'm off now to have a quick look at what everyone else got up to.

See ya
Remember me? I've been missing from blogland for a while now. No excuse really, I just didn't manage to keep up with it. I haven't been following other bloggers either, which has been a mistake as seeing others' projects is what motivates me to be productive too.

I am trying to change my wicked ways though, and to get me started again I have signed up for tomorrow's FNWF hosted by Cheryll at Gone Stitchin'.

I plan to complete this little sewing project that I started for Little Miss many months ago and then put aside. I am going to redo the legs as I don't like the seam down the front. I should have thought of it before making them but, oh well, better late than never!
Finally, a new stitch-along that I will be part of is the Summertime Stitch-a-long organised by Melody of The House on the Side of the Hill. The quilt design is by Erica Kaprow and the PDF pattern is available to purchase from Pattern Spot. It is really striking and I am looking forward to getting started once my SKOW quilt is completed.
Nothing much has been going on here craft-wise, and I've been suffering the guilts because of it. For the last week or two I have been working on my SKOW quilt, just a bit here and there, making not very much progress. So I signed up for last night's FNSI as an incentive and really got stuck in. I managed to sew on the applique pieces on quite a few blocks and have traced the wording on ready for stitching.

These are the blocks I worked on last night.

I only got part way through sewing on the best friends, my finger just couldn't take any more stabs with the needle!

I love how this project is coming along now that I am back into it. Many thanks to Chookyblue for the encouragement along the way, and the daily countdown which has really kicked my butt into gear.

Thanks also to Heidi and Bobbi for organising the FNSI every month.

'Til next time
I owe Lyn a huge apology and she is entitled to think that I am an ungrateful so-and-so. I have emailed her and begged her for forgiveness, not that I deserve it. But look, finally here it is - and isn't it a beauty!!

The stitching is incredible. They are the tiniest stitches I have ever seen! Just perfect! Look at those knobbly knees, and the little birdies - what a cute design. The French General fabric is beautiful too. Really, what is there not to love about this mini - and it's mine, all mine! Thank you so much Lyn for making this for me. It was a great swap and everyone involved did a great job. Thanks again to Cheryll for being such a great swap host.

Take care
HelenHelenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16193128554156253674noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5896456561120783200.post-6636004204605024312012-06-15T23:23:00.000-07:002012-06-15T23:23:15.518-07:00WELCOME MINII have been so slack at blogging, I'm surprised there is anyone left following me! So a huge thank you to those who continue to read and/or comment on my posts. You are a very tolerant bunch!

I have not been keeping up with my sewing commitments either - firstly I failed to complete the first Alphabet Challenge, and, having signed up for the May FNSI, didn't manage to work on anything. Most importantly my SKoW quilt is nowhere near where it should be up to. Hopeless!! I have, however, completed my mini quilt for the 12 inch Mini Club Swap, although I was supposed to put up a post about it yesterday and didn't manage that!

The pattern I used for my mini quilt is Lynette Anderson's Our Home Pillow design. It ended up being more time consuming that I had anticipated, but I think I have now perfected french knots and lazy daisies! I am very pleased with the result, and now I can finally say I have made a quilt, albeit a rather small one :-)

I love the topiary trees!

I hope the recipient of this quilt will love it as much as I do. A big thanks goes to Cheryl for organising this swap and I look forward to taking part in another in the future.

Have a lovely weekend.

I've decided to sign up for the FNSI tonight. I am committing to spending some time on my apron for the Alphabet Challenge. Every night this week I've been going to bed really early, trying to get over a rubbish head cold, so progress has been rather slower than I would like. I hope I can get it finished tonight - that is my goal anyway!

There's still time to join up with tonight's FNSI - head on over to Bobbi's blog to register. There are heaps of people participating - I'm number 72!

Changing the subject ever so slightly :-), look what I got for Mothers Day

Well, going back a wee bit, I won this amazing pattern from Shabby Fabrics. Isn't it stunning! The pattern is called Vintage Rouge by Bloom Creek. There is no way in the world that I am ready to tackle anything like this, so it is going into my 'One day...' pile.

Just as Natalie has done on her blog, I am going to frame these lovelies in simple white frames. They are too cute to send to somebody else. They're mine, all mine!

In other news, I have joined up for two new swaps, both being run by Cheryll of Gone Stitchin'. Firstly the Alphabet Challenge - I think there is probably still time to join this one. Here's the link with the details http://stitchingcubbyhole.blogspot.co.nz/p/alphabet-challenge.html. Here are the basic guidelines I've copied straight from Cheryll's blog (I hope that's okay!)

A partner "post finish" and a secret swap too.
I will issue a challenge to come up with 5 items, each one starting with a specific letter of the alphabet, suggested by me each time. Items can be purchased but some will be handmade. Some will only be small while others more thoughtful. You will have 3 weeks to complete the challenge and after you have all the items together, you MUST post a pic on your blog to enter (if you don't own a blog-email me a photo). .. and then email me. I will then allocate a partner for you to mail to.
* Unknown partner at time of challenge... allocated AFTER finish.
* Challenge issued several times thru the year on the 1st of the month.
* Handmade and purchased items will be needed.
* Challenge completed within 3 weeks... ie... by the 22st of relevant month

This month's letter is A. I'm not quite done with my challenge yet -my apron has a little bit of detail on it, which is taking some time. I'm happy with how it's coming along, I think it will look great when it's done.

The second swap is a 12 inch Mini Club, details here: http://stitchingcubbyhole.blogspot.co.nz/p/12-inch-mini-club.html. The first mini is due 15 June and the theme is WELCOME. I have chosen the fabrics already, but I can't start until the apron is finished. Ooh, the pressure is on!!

Last, but not least, I can now show you what I sent to Shez of Enjoying Life. I hope Shez doesn't mind me 'borrowing' the photos from her blog, but I forgot to take photos before I sent the parcel. So here is what Shez received:

This stitchery was a freebie from Hugs and Kisses. I just love it!

I so enjoyed this swap. Thank you again Shez for my wonderful gifts, and thank you to Kathy for organising the swap. Great job!

Are you still here???? Wow, that was one monster post! Sorry about that. I'll try to spread things out a little in future.
The power cord for my modem had been chewed through so I have had no internet for about a week. I'm up and running again now so I will spend a bit of time tonight catching up on all my emails and I will get back to you asap. Your comments are truly appreciated, so please keep them up!

I have really enjoyed being part of this swap, so a big thank you to Kathy for all the effort she put in organising it, and to Shez for being such a wonderful and generous swap partner.

I have plenty more to blog about - another just-completed swap, and a couple of wins, plus two new swaps that I have just signed up for - but that will have to wait for another day. It's way past my bedtime!

See ya!Helenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16193128554156253674noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5896456561120783200.post-15284982173590132492012-03-17T02:57:00.000-07:002012-03-17T02:57:11.030-07:00FNSI - Getting back to my SKOW quilt ... AT LAST!!I don't know what it is with my Some Kind of Wonderful quilt, but I seem to have quilters block when it comes to getting on and doing it. I started off all guns blazing in Nov/Dec, but after half finishing each of the first four blocks, I just stopped ... and haven't touched it since. I have great intentions and all, but when it comes to it I just can't get going again. That is, until last night. Here is a photo as proof that I am back in the game!

Not finished yet obviously, but the preparation is all done and now I have to get on with the stitching. I want to do this house block and the garden block by the end of March, in line with the schedule for the SKOW SAL being run by Chookyblue. I'm then going to keep up with the monthly deadlines, while catching up with the Dec/Jan/Feb blocks that I haven't completed yet. A bit backwards I know, but if I just start from where I left off then I will always be behind. This is going to be such a great quilt when it's finished... and it will be....on time!!!

Thank you to Heidi and Bobbi for hosting the FNSI.

See ya
The wind has blown all my potted trees and outdoor furniture over, and apparently we can expect worse (gale-force) over the next few days. Good friends of ours are getting married on Saturday so that is pretty unfortunate, but that is Waikato weather for you. Luckily for Little Miss I have started on her winter wardrobe already - she's going to need it sooner rather than later it seems!

My February make is a heavy polar-fleece coat. I haven't finished the hem or the sleeves, as I intended to do those later in the season when Little Miss will be wearing it - she is growing so fast these days! And I have to practise making buttonholes before I attempt them on this coat as I've never done them before. I love this coat, I want one for myself! Little Miss picked the colour - she is currently obsessed with having everything match the colour of her eyes - and I think she made a great choice. It's gorgeous!!

I have, however, just finished a cute little apron for Little Miss. The plan is to make up a little basket of kiddy-sized baking items and maybe the dry ingredients for a biscuit or cake mix in a jar. I have made the apron in a size 4, but it seems quite tiny, so it may not be able to stay in the cupboard until Christmas.

I'm sorry about the poor photo. It's a rubbish angle, but I'm sure you can get the idea. The original pattern (Butterick) has two pockets on the pattern. I'm not sure if I should add them, or maybe just one, or leave it as it is. What do you think??

Have a great weekend everyone.Helenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16193128554156253674noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5896456561120783200.post-7681896387539676132012-02-18T17:51:00.000-08:002012-02-18T17:51:07.552-08:00FNSISo if I pretend that I live in the US can I say that this is still Saturday? I ended up falling asleep at 7pm last night with Little Miss so I didn't manage to get online to post a photo of my FNSI accomplishments. Not that I have a stunning completed project to show anyway! I managed to cut out and get started on Block One of the Summer Block Party quilt designed by Donna's Quilt Studio (my local quilt shop). I love this fabric... I can see it made into some beautiful little dresses for my blue-eyed girl. I gave up having only completed three quarters of the block - I'm going to have to unpick some bits as the points around the outside of the block are not lining up properly. I have SO much to learn - it looks easy in theory, but I really struggle! Any way, here is the photo.

I've seen the completed quilt at the shop - gorgeous! Donna is one very talented lady!

I hope everyone else had a successful FNSI. See ya next time!
